Robert Pinsky on Wit and Nothing

I’m not exactly a fan of Robert Pinsky’s poetry, but he’s done a lot of good work—this, for instance—and his critical writing is very good indeed. Today’s article at Slate, “Something from Nothing,” is especially well done. It’s wonderful to see John Wilmot, Earl of Rochester, juxtaposed with the comic lyricist Bert Williams, the verses are wonderful, and references to things such as Odyseus’s taunting of the Cyclops are unexpected and perfect.

Why, then, are his choices of contemporary poetry for publication in Slate so routinely dreadful?
